You Got Served: Marissa A Ross

There's a funny lady in town...and she actually knows a thing or two about wine. In fact, this past year after scoring herself a much deserved Editor's Choice in the Saveur Blog Awards, she was then scooped up by Bon Appétit as their new wine editor...got a book deal...and has been dizzy from several high profile projects ever since. This fashion collaboration about sustainable wine might be my latest favorite.

I'm  pretty sure this is what you call a boss...at least if you consider that someone with mega-hustle, supreme style...and wits, not to mention the uncanny ability to embrace transparency. A self-proclaimed leisure enthusiast, you might know her from her hysterical instagram (and snaps for that matter), her ...or as the infamous creator of the head back, lips up wine approval stance known as "The Ross Test".

Any way you chose to consume this gal...you know that Marissa is a major firecracker. A delightful burst of energy in an otherwise (could be) dull wine scene. She's got us laughing, yet realizing sulfates are...okay!, while making us think about Rosé in celeb terms... and btw totally giving us permission to put ice in it

In a word - she's an unpredictable roller coaster ride that you'll want to get in line for again and again. Wine included - obvi.

Do you have a routine or game plan when it comes to styling with props for your photos?

Not really! As with my writing, the photos are really inspired by the wine I'm drinking while I'm drinking it, where I am when I'm drinking it, and how it makes me feel. I can never predict that sort of thing, so I always am flying by the seat of my pants.

What's your Serving Style? Brand new/on trend, unique vintage originals, particular colors?

I try to mix vintage-inspired pops of color with lots of clean white and dark woods.

Do you have a favorite piece in your collection? What's the story behind it?

My favorite piece I own is my grandmother's wine glass. Before she passed, she told me about a tradition she wanted to start with my grandfather but never did: to collect a wine glass from every place they traveled. She gave me one of her glasses to get my collection started. It's also just very special to me. It has a special spot in my wine rack, and it just makes me feel like she's still here drinking wine with me.

On the spot Wine Review! Tell us about this delicious Rosé

I bought the J. Mourat rosé mostly because I'm obsessed with their chardonnay/chenin blanc and had all my fingers crossed that I would be equally obsessed with their rosé. I was not disappointed. On the nose it smells like a small strawberry farm I stayed on in Fiumalbo, Italy last summer. Like recently watered fields as the sun sets with hints of wildflowers, and a touch of that warm "I'm staying in someone else's home" smell.

I can't put words to that smell, but it's a little like vanilla and laundry. On the palate, it is lots of crisp, youthful strawberries and watermelon with a dash or two of sea salt. As for the Ross Test (AKA chugging out of the bottle), it's okay. If you're in a bind, sure, you can chug it. But that lovely bit of salt turns kind of bitter at the back of your throat, so I encourage you to find a glass to enjoy optimally. Overall, a really lovely and very affordable bottle I highly recommend.

If you could get a hold of any item for your kitchen or tabletop, what do you currently have your eye on?

I would love a Blendo wine glass and decanter set in mint-teal but I've yet to find one (mint-teal is my very specific, and possibly not real, favorite color).

If you could express your personal style in 3 emojis, what would they be?

If there's anyone who can successfully combine moss, cocktail ice and an owl figurine to create a whimsical landscape for a delicious glass of rosé...well, I suppose Marissa is the one who can pull it off! She's also quite the hostess - one who always seems eager to put on a killer record and pour you a chilled glass of wine that you've never had before. Divine!

Keep an eye out for Marissa's first book due out on Plume next year as well as a wine tumbler collaboration with the fabulous enamel brand Crow Canyon that will be available for purchase soon on her website: Wine All The Time.
